SOLAR MODEL INDEPENDENT NEUTRINO OSCILLATION SIGNALS IN THE FORTHCOMING SOLAR NEUTRINO EXPERIMENTS

By combining the chlorine, Kamiokande and forthcoming gallium results one can pinpoint neutrino oscillations almost independently of solar models. Neutrino oscillations would be unaviodable at the 2σ level if the result of the gallium experiments is outside the range 82-118 SNU. The Sudbury experiment can give completely model independent evidence for neutrino oscillations either through a distortion of the neutrino spectrum, or through night/day effects, or through the measurement of the ratio of the neutral current events to the charged current events. We study the domains in the (Δm2,sin2 2θ) plane where the different methods are sensitive: it is shown that a wide range of values of Δm2between 10-8-10-4 eV2 will be accessible in the next decade. © 1990 Elsevier Science Publishers B.V.
