SYMMETRIC RESONANCE CHARGE-TRANSFER IN HE+(1S)-HE2+ COLLISIONS

The total cross section, QT, for charge transfer in He +-He2+ collisions was calculated in the perturbed stationary-state approximation using accurate potentials. Agreement within 4% with the previous, less accurate, calculation of Bates and Boyd (1962) was found for energies between 40 eV and 24 keV. After allowance was made for the finite angular acceptance of the apparatus of Peart and Dolder (1979), good agreement, within 6%, was found with their measurements at the lowest energy, 106 eV. At the highest energy considered, 20.5 keV, theory and experiment were within 18% after using a modified QT derived by scaling the elaborate H +-H calculations of Rapp and Dinwiddie (1972). The agreement at intermediate energies was between 10 and 15%. The authors' calculations confirm those of Jognaux et al. (1978) which lie about 50% above their measurements between 200 and 1700 eV.
