57FE HYPERFINE FIELDS IN MAGNETITE (FE3O4)

The 57Fe Mössbauer spectrum in an applied 37 kOe field is interpreted in terms of three superimposed six-line patterns corresponding to at least three distinct species of Fe ions. While the observed hyperfine fields and isomer shifts of Fe3+ at A and B are consistent with the trends in ferrite spinels, the apparent Fe2+ values are rather unusual. © 1969 The American Institute of Physics.
