E. C. Poulton and P. R. Freeman (see 40:3) have recently discussed 2-way and 1-way asymmetrical transfer. They assert that 2-way asymmetric transfer will be indicated by a conditions * order interaction effect. Here, it is pointed out that if the data are analyzed in the conventional manner, such transfer will not result in a condition * order interaction effect. Detecting such transfer is even more difficult than indicated in the Poulton-Freeman article; in fact, such transfer is beautifully confounded with the experimental main effects. In contrast, 1-way asymmetrical transfer leads to a conditions * order interaction effect. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved). © 1969 American Psychological Association.
