MECHANISM OF THE OXIDATIVE COUPLING OF METHANE USING CO2 AS AN OXIDANT OVER PBO-MGO

CO2 was suggested to be utilized as an oxidant for the oxidative coupling of methane over PbOMgO and alkaline earth metal-doped CaO catalysts under PCH4 = 8.3 kPa, PCO = 8.3 kPa, and PO = 0.08 kPa, and at 1073 K. The mechanism of this reaction (2CH4 + C02 = C2H6 + CO + H2O and/or 2CH4 + 2CO2 = C2H4 + 2CO + 2H20) was studied over a 15 mol% PbOMgO catalyst by using isotope techniques and kinetics. 13CO2 and 12CD4 gave exclusively 13CO and 12C2 hydrocarbons, and no 12CO was produced under the low W/F conditions at 1073 K. One of the oxygen atoms of C02 was concluded to be used for the CH4 coupling reaction through the reverse shift reaction of C02. It was also found that C2 hydrocarbons reacted further with oxygen from C02 under conditions of high conversion. © 1990.
