CRYSTAL LIQUID-CRYSTAL TRANSITION IN SINGLE-CRYSTALS OF POLY-HYDROXYBENZOIC ACID

Electron diffraction patterns have been obtained from as-polymerized single crystals of phase II of poly-hydroxybenzoic acid as a function of temperature into the liquid-crystalline (lc) state above 350-degrees-C. The patterns in the lc state consist of two near hexagonal patterns rotated by 16-degrees, with streaks connecting the high and low (orthorhombic) patterns over a transition temperature range of ca. 50-degrees. Single crystal patterns have also been obtained from a number of other polymorphs at room temperature before and after heating to 400-degrees-C.
