ROD COIL COPOLYMERS - THEIR AGGREGATION BEHAVIOR

摘要
The aggregation behavior of rod-coil block copolymers in a selective solvent of low molecular weight is considered within the scaling approach. The equilibrium structure of micelles and lamellae is analyzed. Thermodynamically stable micelles are characterized by extended, starlike coronas. The lamellae are expected to exhibit a tilting, smectic A-smectic C, first-order phase transition driven by the competition between surface and deformation free energies. The Petschek-Wiefling design for ferroelectric smectic phases is analyzed in the case of swollen lamellar phases formed by ABC coil-rod-coil copolymers. The alignment of the electrical dipoles is pictured as a result of the interaction between A novel application of this scheme to the design of paraelectric, optically active micelles is considered. © 1990, American Chemical Society.
