Performance tests were carried out on a force-cooled Nb-Ti superconducting poloidal coil as part of the R&D programme for the Large Helical Device project. The test coil, known as TOKI-PF, has a poloidal shape with 600 mm inner and 820 mm outer diameters, and operates at nominal current of 25.6 kA. Excitation tests of TOKI-PF began in July 1 99 1, and achieved the nominal operating condition to obtain enough experimental data for designing the Large Helical Device. The stability margins at 1 5 kA and 25 kA were 1 X 10(6) j m-3 and 7 X 10(4) j m(-3), respectively.
