摘要
Accelerated aging of papers of pure cellulose with low initial pH and degree of polymerization results in a significant loss of paper strength. Analysis of sheet properties indicates that the loss of paper strength and embrittlement are mainly a result of a decrease in fibre strength. The loss of fibre strength is, in turn, due to depolymerization of the cellulose caused by acid-catalysed hydrolysis. Molecular weight distributions obtained by size exclusion chromatography show that the depolymerization of cellulose during accelerated aging proceeds in a random fashion. A new parameter based on the stress-stain relationship is introduced to characterize the paper embrittlement during aging.
