Glasses in the Bi-Ca-Sr-Cu-O system were prepared by both twin roller and metal-plate quenching techniques. The crystallization process was studied by differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy as well as electrical measurements. The influence of electrical field on the crystallization of the glasses was investigated for the first time. The route of crystallization is strongly composition-dependent and growth of crystals in the glasses can be accelerated by the applied electrical field. The preliminary experiment showed that the glass-ceramics prepared by the current-heating technique exhibited highly preferred orientation. The effects of annealing conditions on the superconductivity in the Bi-Ca-Sr-Cu-O glass-ceramics were also studied.
