Product ratios from competition reactions accompanying the assisted aquations of [Co(NH3)5(OS(CH3)2)]3+by MnO4-and of [Co(NH3)5N3]2+by nitrous acid show that different intermediates produce the final products in the two systems. Product ratios determined under different conditions in aqueous media, in ethanol-water media, in three-way competition studies, and in temperature-dependence studies are more consistent with the formation of the final products by interchange (Id) processes, rather than by dissociation (D) processes, of the intermediates [Co(NH3)5(O2S(CH3)2)]3+and [Co-(NH3)5N4O]3+. © 1979, American Chemical Society.
