Pigmented villonodular synovitis usually is intraarticular but it may also arise from bursae or tendon sheaths. Both forms may invade bone, and this invasion may lead to a false diagnosis of malignant tumor. Angiography in patients with pigmented villonodular synovitis usually shows highly vascular lesions with early filling of draining veins, also regarded as a sign of malignant tumor. In the present report an unusual case of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the knee is described. The long course of the illness and the involvement of bone and soft tissue finally necessitated amputation for cure.
