TEM of the Cuvierian tubules of Holothuria forskäli reveals collagen fibrils arranged in a cholesteric analogue system reminiscent of many chitinous systems. The whole liquid crystalline system is further convoluted in a complex way along the tubule axis. The system also shows defects directly analogous to those seen on the molecular scale in liquid crystals. The fibrils themselves, though showing a 68nm banding in LS, are of a characteristic highly irregular cross section. © 1979.
