PROTEIN-RNA CONTACTS IN SENDAI VIRUS NUCLEOCAPSIDS REVEALED BY PHOTO-CROSSLINKING

Contacts between protein species and nucleic acid bases in the genomic RNA of Sendai virus nucleocapsids were examined by ultraviolet light (uv)-induced crosslinking. Both NP, the nucleocapsid structure unit, and P, the less abundant protein species implicated in viral transcription, were efficiently linked to the RNA, indicating that both species contact RNA bases. However, the RNA serves as template for viral RNA polymerases in the intact nucleocapsid, so these contacts must either be reversible or restricted to noncoding regions of the bases. © 1979.
