INTERACTION OF ASF5 WITH GRAPHITE AND OTHER BENZENOID SYSTEMS

Analogous to its intercalation reaction with graphite, arsenic pentafluoride is found to react with small aromatic molecules. Electron spin resonance investigation suggests both graphite intercalation and aromatic molecule interaction to involve electron transfer from benzenoid to arsenic species, thereby generating formal radical cation products. Fluorine magnetic resonance indicates the dominant arsenic oxidation state to be pentavalent, with the arsenic entity possessing considerable mobility. Temperature variant x-ray diffraction of graphite/AsF5 shows that this mobility is frozen out by -160°C, an observation consistent with temperature variant nuclear magnetic resonance. © 1979.
