Recent developments are reviewed in the general area of surface magnetic anisotropy of ultra-thin ferromagnetic films of 3d transition metals. The surface magneto-optic Kerr effect (SMOKE) is introduced as a probe of magnetic anisotropy effects in ultra-thin ferromagnetic films. SMOKE results from the author's laboratory are highlighted, including the study of the stabilization of vertical easy axes of magnetization in a variety of epitaxial Fe film systems.
