INFRARED-SPECTRA OF THE N2-HCL AND OC-HCL COMPLEXES

The ν1 (HCl stretch) bands of the weakly bound complexes N2-HCl and OC-HCl have been observed in the 3.5-μm region using a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and a cooled long-path absorption cell. This is the first infrared observation of N2-HCl. Identification of the bands was only possible after careful subtraction of the absorption due to the HCl dimer. An earlier measurement of the ν2 (CO stretch) band of OC-HCl has been extended to higher J values, but a search for the ν2 band of N2HCl was not successful. The analysis of these bands yields band origins, rotational parameters, and centrifugal distortion parameters (including H) which give information on intermolecular forces. The B value of OC-HCl was found to increase with ν1, as in the case of OC-HF, indicating a shortened intermolecular bond. However, B for N2-HCl decreased with ν1, unlike N2HF. © 1993 Academic Press, Inc.
