DISTRIBUTION OF FILAMENTOUS GREEN-ALGAE IN NEARSHORE PERIPHYTON COMMUNITIES ALONG THE NORTH SHORE OF LAKE-SUPERIOR

Filamentous green algal components of periphyton communities in the wave-washed zone along the north shore of Lake Superior [Canada] were studied to determine their nature and distribution. A total of 26 stations spread out over a 157-mile segment of shoreline in the western arm of Lake Superior was selected and studied. Ulothrix zonata was the predominant filamentous green alga found along the north shore of Lake Superior. Second in abundance was a species of Stigeoclonium. Cladophora growths were scarce or absent.
