Work function (WF) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements are reported for Pd, Ni, and Cu overlayers on polycrystalline Re specimens. Small amounts of Pd or Ni cause a decrease in the Re work function, consistent with electron transfer from the overlayer to the substrate. This result is contrary to indications of bulk electronegativity, but consistent with observed changes in binding energies for the metal overlayers. For Cu on Re, the direction of change for both the WF and Cu binding energy depend upon the thermal history of the specimen.
