SELF-ACTUALIZATION AND COMMUNICATION OF FACILITATIVE CONDITIONS DURING COUNSELING

Judges rated the levels of empathic understanding (E), respect or positive regard (R), and facilitative genuineness (G) provided by 30 graduate students to clients during a beginning counseling practicum experience, and these ratings were then related to scores on 12 scales of the Personal Orientation Inventory. Computed intercorrelations of all variables disclosed that personality characteristics associated with self-actualization were significantly related to ability to communicate E and G. Findings suggest that counselor-education programs should provide the kinds of experiences which will facilitate personal growth and self-actualization of counselor candidates. (25 ref.)
