EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE, FREEZING PERIOD, AND DRYING ON THE SPORULATION OF COCHLIOBOLUS-SATIVUS ON MATURE STEM BASES OF WHEAT

Stem pieces (6.5-7.0 cm long) from mature wheat (Triticum aestivum) showing symptoms of common root rot (Cochliobolus sativus) were obtained from plants grown in the field at Toowoomba (Australia) and Saskatoon (Canada) and were exposed to various conditions. At the end of each treatment, stems were incubated at 20-degrees-C and production of conidia of C sativus was measured. Stems exposed for 1 week to temperatures below 1-degrees-C produced fewer conidia than stems exposed to temperatures above 1-degrees-C. Freezing reduced production of conidia but duration of the freezing period had no effect. Numbers of conidia produced on stems frozen at -20-degrees-C for 1 to 6 weeks and then incubated at 20-degrees-C were 1-3% of those that developed on stems incubated at 20-degrees-C continuously. Freezing did not reduce sporulation when stems were dry. Stems at Toowoomba, but not at Saskatoon, produced more conidia when subjected to moist/dry cycles than when kept constantly moist.
