MAGNETIC-PROPERTIES OF ULTRATHIN EPITAXIAL FCC-FE(001) FILMS ON CU(001) AND CU3AU(001)

Ultrathin films (5 monolayers) of epitaxial fcc Fe(100) were grown under molecular-beam conditions on Cu(100) and Cu3Au(001) substrates at 36-degrees-C and were characterized by LEED and AES. All films were found to be ferromagnetic at 295 and 30 K by in-situ Fe-57 conversion-electron Mossbauer spectroscopy in UHV. Most of the Fe-57 nuclei experience a large magnetic hyperfine field of 34.2(5) and 35.2(5)T at 30 K for Cu and Cu3Au, respectively, indicating large atomic magnetic Fe moments which are oriented within the film plane. On the contrary, fcc-Fe(001) films on Cu(001) grown at high substrate temperatures approximately greater-than 200-degrees-C were found to be paramagnetic above almost-equal-to 65 K. Our results are discussed in context with recent band-theoretical calculations of magneto-volume instabilities in fcc Fe.
