SOLUBILITY OF SOLID IODINE IN NEAR-CRITICAL FLUID XENON

The solubility of I2(s) in near-critical fluid xenon has been spectrophotometrically determined. Isothermal solubility measurements were carried out under subcritical conditions in the liquid phase at the temperatures (279.96±0.13) K and (287.24±0.08) K and under supercritical conditions at (298.79±0.05) K and (313.56±0.05) K; an isobaric run was done for a pressure of (7.21±0.01) MPa. The solubility shows the typical strong change with T or p close to the critical density of xenon. It is shown that solvent density is a more convenient variable than pressure to express the changes in isothermal solubility in the solvent critical region, because part of the strong pressure dependence of solubility is due to strong variation of the solvent compressibility. © 1992 Academic Press Limited All rights reserved.
