摘要
The productivity of resource poor smallholders is low. Policy initiatives that facilitate access to existing maize production technologies are not sufficient to increase productivity for this group. There is a need for a redirected research agenda with priority being given to soil fertility management under constrained smallholder rotational systems. There are a number of technologies, including agroforestry, that offer this potential. Success is dependent on having both a detailed understanding of soil fertility and an understanding of the socio-economic circumstances of the farming community.
