HYDROSILYLATION OF M-TMI - NEW SILOXANE BASED ALIPHATIC POLYISOCYANATES

Well-characterized polyfunctional aliphatic isocyanates were obtained in high purity and quantitative yield by the hydrosilylation of m-isopropenyl-alpha,alpha-dimethylbenzyl isocyanate (m-TMI) with cyclic and acyclic hydrogenmethylsiloxanes. The products were characterized by H-1 and C-13-NMR, IR, and GPC, and all result exclusively from beta-addition to m-TMI. Polymers with SiH groups are also effective hydrosilylating agents of m-TMI. The isocyanato siloxanes can be used as precursors for star and network polymers as well as other polyfunctional reagents, and examples of reactions with methoxy polyethylene glycol and with amine-containing compounds are discussed.
