A vacuum-evaporated, uniform, transparent, commercially available thin-film gold electrode is described which permits transmission-like internal-reflection spectra to be obtained during an electrochemical reaction. Optical spectra of eosin Y and tris(4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)iron(II) sulfate are shown and the results are given of measurements made during potentiometric, potential-step, cyclic-voltammetry, and chrono-potentiometric experiments. The results are, with two exceptions, quantitatively understood.
