CONFORMATIONAL STUDY OF N-SULFINYLANILINES AND ASSIGNMENT OF VIBRATIONS OF N-SULFINYLANILINES AND N,N,-DI-ARYLSULFURDIIMINES USING N-15 ENRICHMENT AND RAMAN RESONANCE RESULTS

1H and 13C NMR spectra show that the N-sulfinylanilines have a syn-planar conformation except for the 2,4,6-mesityl compound which has a syn conformation in which the mesityl ring is perpendicular to the CNSO plane. IR and Raman spectra of 15N labelled PhNSO and PhNSNPh have been used to assign characteristic vibrations of these compounds and of several substituted N-sulfinylanilines and N,N′-di-arylsulfurdiimines. The results show that hardly any coupling exists between ν(NS) and ν(SO) of PhNSO. Resonance Raman spectra of di-p-tolylsulfurdiimine show the strongest enhancement of intensity for νs(PhN) and νs(NS). © 1979.
