CRYSTALLIZATION AND MAGNETIC-PROPERTIES OF AMORPHOUS GD-FE AND ER-FE ALLOYS

Amorphous alloys with the compositions Gd68Fe32, Gd60Fe40, Gd50Fe50 and Er68Fe32 were prepared by melt spinning. Magnetic measurements showed that the rare earth-iron interaction is sufficiently strong in the Gd alloys to lead to a magnetic moment on the Fe atoms. In the Er alloy the Fe atoms do not have a magnetic moment. The crystallization behaviour in the Gd-Fe alloys was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. It is shown that the tendency to glass formation need not necessarily be highest at the eutectic composition. © 1979.
