Enzymic rate enhancements of the glycosyltransferases are estimated to be in the order of 10(10), as revealed by a determination for the first time of the magnitude of the spontaneous glucosylating reactivity (which prevails only below pH 3) of the prototypical 'activated' co-substrate of biological glycosylation, UDPG.
