SEQUENTIAL DECAY IN REACTIONS 14N(ALPHA ALPHAP)13C AND 14N(ALPHA ALPHAD)12C AT E(ALPHA=22.9-MEV

Correlations in the reactions 14N(α, αp) and 14N(α, αd) were measured in a coplanar geometry with three-dimensional pulse-height analysis. The α-particles were detected with a solid-state detector and the coincident protons and deutrons with a dE/dx-E solid-state detector telescope. The telescope was fixed at 25°, whereas the position of the α-particle detector was varied. Transitions to the ground states of 13C and 12C and rather weak transitions to excited states of 13C were observed. The energy spectra of the transitions to the ground states of 13C and 12C shown a pronounced peak structure as is expected from a sequential reaction mechanism. The kinematics of these peaks indicate a selective population of levels in the intermediate nuclei 14N, 16O, 17O and of the 2.184 MeV level in 6Li. The selection of the levels can almost completely be understood on the basis of parity and isospin conservation, the influence of competing channels, some spectroscopic properties of the levels involved and angular momentum arguments. © 1969.
