UPPER CRITICAL-FIELD OF A SM1.85CE0.15CUO4-Y SINGLE-CRYSTAL - INTERACTION BETWEEN SUPERCONDUCTIVITY AND ANTIFERROMAGNETIC ORDER IN COPPER OXIDES

The temperature dependence of the anisotropic upper critical magnetic field, Hc2(T), has been determined resistively in antiferromagnetic Sm1.85Ce0.15CuO4-y single crystals. We observe the first evidence in high-Tc copper oxides for the interaction between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic ordering of rare-earth ions; estimates of the exchange coupling J0.1 eV and the Ginzburg-Landau coherence lengths ab=79 AI and c=14.7 AI are obtained. In both Nd1.84Ce0.16CuO4-y and Sm1.85Ce0.15CuO4-y, the Hc2 data above TN can be described by Hc2(T)/Hc2+(0)=(1-T/Tc)1.6. © 1990 The American Physical Society.
