Naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, and biphenyl adsorbed on silica gel have been irradiated with 60 Co γ rays at a dose rate of 200 krads/hr to a total dose of 3 Mrads. The amount of adsorbed material was 0.1-1%. Aromatic cations were detected by their esr spectra at 77-300°K. The singly charged naphthalene dimer and biphenyl monomer were unambiguously identified. The coupling constants of the naphthalene cation are similar to the solution values. The splittings of the biphenyl cation are apara = 6.6 G, aortho = 2.8 G. Neutral radicals formed seem to react at higher temperatures to yield secondary radicals which are persistent above room temperature.
