摘要
Because of recent legislation restricting the disposal of sewage sludges by incineration, fresh water dilution, and ocean dumping, many municipalities in the United States are considering land application methods for disposing of their sludges. This paper describes the Beltsville Aerated Pile Method for composting sewage sludges which largely overcomes the problems associated with land application of sludges. This method transforms either raw or digested sludge into compost in about 3 weeks. Sufficiently high temperatures are generated to destroy pathogenic organisms. The compost produced is a humus-like material, free of malodors, and useful as a low-analysis fertilizer and soil conditioner. Unlike sludge, it can be conveniently stored, easily handled, and uniformly spread on land. Sludge compost can be used advantageously in the production of agricultural crops, turfgrasses, trees, and ornamental plants. It can also be used for reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands, and for landscaping purposes. © 1978.
