ELECTRICAL CHANGES IN BRAIN IN COURSE OF EXPERIMENTAL ALLERGIC ENCEPHALOMYELITIS IN RABBITS

Electrical changes in the brain were studied daily in rabbits with permanently-implanted electrodes in the cortex and subcortical regions and were related to motor disturbances and to the observed skin reaction, following the induction of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE). All animals developed electrical abnormalities which were followed by motor weakness, but no correlation was found between the severity of these two phenomena. There was a clear relationship between the appearance of maximum skin reactivity and the onset of motor disturbances and to a lesser degree to the severity of the electrical changes in the brain, indicating that each of these phenomena are related to the same immunological mechanism. Early lesions showed perivascular infiltration while more chronic lesions showed glial proliferation and central necrosis. © 1969.
