Campbell and Counter (1969) measured “thresholds” for various short durations of low frequency sinusoidal signals. The adaptive psychophysical procedure they used is shown to yield uninterpretable results; values they report can represent a wide range of performance levels. In this note, we take Campbell's and Counter's study as an example of the methodological traps in seemingly straightforward testing methods. © 1969, Acoustical Society of America. All rights reserved.
