A NEW PROCEDURE FOR ANALYZING X-RAY-SPECTRA FROM LABORATORY PLASMAS

A general theoretical method for analyzing experimental Z-pinch data to determine average values of the electron temperature, ion density, and the mass of the emission region is presented. the method involves collisional-radiative ionization equilibrium (CRE) calculations that take into account the effects of plasma opacity. All of the X-ray data typically observed experimentally are utilized: the total yield in K-shell X-rays, the spectrum, the X-ray pulsewidth, and the time-integrated pinhole picture showing the spatial extent of the emission region. In order to apply the method, one needs an appropriate database of CRE results. A database for aluminum is provided in this paper. We use it together with theoretically obtained Z-pinch K-shell emission data to critique the validity and/or degree of applicability of the analysis procedure.
