INTERCEPTIVE PERIODONTICS WITH ELECTROSURGERY

The limitations of periodontal prostheses were discussed and the need for expanded interceptive periodontal procedures were identified. Electron microscope pictures of interproximal tissue removed with a fully rectified electrosurgical instrument have shown the initial incision to be noninjurious at the cell level. The healing of tissue after a seven-day period failed to show any difference between the usual knife cut and electrosurgically treated tissue. Conservative removal of traumatized interproximal fibrotic tissue is recommended. This can be effectively accomplished by the use of an electrosurgical instrument after the tooth is prepared and before making the impressions. © 1969 The C. V. Mosby Company.
