Gateway Rehabilitation Center, the largest addiction treatment center in Western Pennsylvania, struggled with the questions of nicotine dependence for many years. It developed what was thought to be a comprehensive nicotine treatment program and became totally smoke free on October 2, 1989. The following narrative describes Gateway's rationale and plan to become smoke free, the reasons for their ''retreat,'' and their continued efforts to address nicotine dependence.
