FEASIBILITY OF DENITRIFICATION IN AIRLIFT-LOOP REACTORS

Simultaneous carbonaceous oxidation, nitrification and denitrification are possible in biofilm systems, and so in theory must be feasible in an airlift-loop reactor. A pilot-scale experiment demonstrated that at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1.5 h a nitrogen removal of 70 - 80 % would be realized. The total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) in influent was 46 gN m-3 on the average; the average biomass concentration (volatile solids) in the reactor was 22 kg m-3. This finding makes airlift-loop reactors interesting and competitive for nitrogen removal compared to conventional low-loaded activated sludge systems.
