The photodesorption of NH3 from GaAs (100) at 193 nm has been characterized using 2 + 1 resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy via the intermediate B state. The final state distribution of photodesorbed NH3 is nonthermal: the translational and rotational distributions can be approximated by Boltzmann temperatures of T(max) = 300 +/- 30 and T(rot) = 350 +/- 50 K, respectively, with a relative population of 6% +/- 2% in the nu2 = 1 vibrational level (or T(vib) = 490 +/- 60 K). Possible energy transfer mechanisms responsible for desorption are discussed.
