EVALUATION OF THE GD2(ZRXTI1-X)2O7 PYROCHLORE SYSTEM AS AN OXYGEN GAS SENSOR

We have recently completed a detailed study of the Gd2(ZrxTi1 - x)2O7 pyrochlore system, which may represent an attractive alternative to stabilized ZrO2 in such applications as automobile exhaust sensors. Possible advantages of the new system include: (1) intrinsic fast oxygen ion conductivity; (2) potential for lower temperature operation due to lower activation energies for conduction and more rapid electrode kinetics; and (3) greater flexibility in materials optimization. These issues, as well as questions related to the range of applicability of these new solid electrolytes (i.e., electrolytic domain boundaries), will be discussed in relation to oxygen sensor design and optimization. © 1990.
