The decomposition of aluminium chloride hexahydrate was examined by differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry in combination with evolved gas analysis. The examinations were carried out by means of a Q-Derivatograph. It was found that in the course of the decomposition reaction the compound transformed into aluminium oxide through the formation of basic aluminium chloride as intermediate. Comparison of the curves obtained under dynamic and quasi-isothermal heating conditions showed that the formation of the above intermediate could be observed only under quasiisothermal heating conditions. © 1979 Wiley Heyden Ltd., Chichester and Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest.
