The influence of anti-antilymphocyte globulin (ALG) antibody on the immunosuppressive potency of antilymphocyte serum (ALS) was investigated in an outbred population of rats. Marked potentiation of ALS was noticed in animals made tolerant to rabbit globulin and, therefore, incapable of producing anti-ALG antibody. On the other hand, the immunosuppressive effect of ALS was essentially the same in rats with high anti-ALG titers as compared with controls who had no such antibody titers before they were started on ALS. These results suggest that ALS is immunosuppressive even in the presence of anti-ALG antibody and marked potentiation of its action may be obtained if the recipient is made tolerant to foreign globulin. © 1969 by The Williams and Wilkins Co.
