COMPARISON OF PANCREATIC RESPONSES TO NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC SECRETINS IN CONSCIOUS CATS

The relative effectiveness of two natural secretins, GIH secretin and Boots secretin, and synthetic secretin in the stimulation of pancreatic volume flow and bicarbonate output was studied in conscious cats with cannulated pancreatic ducts. It was demonstrated that the shapes of the pancreatic dose-response curves for GIH secretin and synthetic secretin, given intravenously in progressively increasing doses or in single-dose injections, were similar. The comparison of natural secretins indicates that Boots secretin was about 10 times less potent than GIH secretin on a unit for unit basis. The cannulation of the feline major pancreatic duct through a duodenal fistula, with the bile diverted from the common flow, with pancreatic juice to the exterior, seems to be a stable, reproducible, and easily available method for the study of pancreatic secretion in physiologic conditions. © 1969 Hoeber Medical Division • Harper & Row, Publishers, Incorporated.
