ULTRASOUND DETECTION OF EXTRA-HEPATIC ENCAPSULATED BILE - BILOMA

The rupture of an extrahepatic bile duct secondary to blunt trauma is a rare event and when it occurs it produces free leakage of bile into the peritoneal cavity. The authors recently encountered an extrahepatic loculated collection of bile due to a traumatic bile duct rupture. The diagnosis was suggested by the use of gray scale ultrasonography. The formation and encapsulation of bile in the upper abdomen as a result of this type of trauma has not been described The term 'biloma' to describe our observation is used.
