THE ADSORPTION OF BUTENE-1, ISOBUTENE, CIS-2-BUTENE AND TRANS-2-BUTENE ON PT(111) AT 95-K - NEXAFS AND UPS RESULTS

摘要
The adsorption of the various butene isomers has been monitored on Pt(111) at 95 K using UPS. The multilayer spectra are in good agreement with the gas phase spectra and differ strongly from one isomer to another. At one monolaYer, a first indication of various strongly adsorbed species result from the positions of the molecular orbitals. NEXAFS also indicates strong chemisorption and the sigma(C=C)* resonance has disappeared. All monolayers are oriented with their C-C axis parallel to the surface. The positions of the sigma(C-C)* resonances corresponding to the single bonds follow the same trend in the monolayers, the condensed multilayers and the gas phase showing that the di-sigma-bonded, adsorbed butene isomers differ.
