It is suggested that the gross behaviour of the static quadrupole moments of the first excited 2+ states in both vibrational and rotational regions can be derived from an axially symmetric deformation of the nucleus. When this deformation is small, one can expect non-adiabatic effects. We have partly included such by use of projected wavefunctions. The actual calculation is performed for 152Sm, but, by varying the deformation parameter, it is possible to reproduce the systematic trend of the observed ratios of the static to transition quadrupole matrix elements. © 1968.
