AN FTIR STUDY OF CARBONATE IN SYNTHETIC APATITES

Synthetic carbonate apatites were prepared by precipitation at either pH 7, pH 9, or with controlled pH fluctuating between 5 and 9. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption spectra of the compounds were studied. Results showed that the amount of carbonate present during precipitation and pH are the determining factors in the formation of A- or B-type carbonates. At high pH or at low pH and high carbonate content, B-type apatites were obtained and at lower pH and smaller carbonate content, A + B-type apatites were obtained. For low cabonate samples an 866 cm-1 IR band was observed. Analysis of this band led to the assignment of this band primarily to HPO4 = for samples prepared under the conditions of the present study.
