摘要：

The presence of gumbo clays in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea requires the use of specialized drilling fluids to control hydration, swelling, and dispersion of those clays. A geological study was made of the source and deposition of the clay; and the physical properties of the clay and how they affect drilling were analyzed. The paper describes problems encountered, the mechanical equipment required to handle clay solids, and the inhibited fluids used. A profile of clay composition is also included.
