摘要
The investigation of the anodic oxidation of ethylene glycol at smooth platinum in alkaline solution by the triangular voltage scan method, by controlled potential electrolysis as well as by adsorption measurements and chemical and mass spectrometrical analysis yields the following results: 1. Within the overall reaction 8 electrons per EG-molecule are transferred the final product being oxalate. Glycol aldehyde, glycolate and glyoxalate have been identified as intermediates or by-products. 2. The reaction proceeds via a dehydrogenated adsorbed intermediate. 3. The kinetics of the oxidation is determined by a 1-electron step. The anodic reaction orders of EG and OH--ions are zEG = 0.46 and zOH = 0.55, respectively. These results are interpreted by means of a reaction mechanism. The kinetics of the oxidation are explained with the aid of the Temkin adsorption isotherm. © 1978.
